The same haircut can take on a different character with a different finish. Before reaching for a product, ask yourself what you want to see in the mirror: a relaxed, textured look or a more deliberate style with visible comb lines?

A matte finish is worth exploring if you prefer less reflected light. A glossy finish makes the surface of the hair and the direction of your styling more visible. Neither is the correct answer for everyone; your clothes, plans and preferences all play a part.

Consider finish and hold separately. The word “matte” alone does not tell you how strongly a product holds. Read its description, application instructions and recommended amount. Different numbers within a range may represent different options.

Start with a small amount and distribute it evenly between your hands. You can add more if needed. Follow the packaging when deciding whether to apply to damp or dry hair; formulas do not all work the same way.

If you are unsure, show your barber a finish you like and explain how much time you spend styling at home. A good choice is one you can use again the next morning.
